General Dojo Etiquette

  • Bow when entering and leaving the dojo. Shows respect for the training space.
  • Arrive on time. Being punctual shows respect for the instructor and fellow students.
  • If late, do not enter the dojo if the instructor is demonstrating. Wait by the door until the instructor has finished demonstrating.
  • Keep the dojo clean. Maintain cleanliness of the mat (tatami). Help pack up after class.
  • Wear a clean gi. Personal hygiene and tidy attire are essential.
  • Remove jewelry and watches. These can cause injury or damage during practice.

On the Mat (Tatami)

  • Bow when stepping on and off the mat. A sign of respect for the training area.
  • Be quiet while the instructor is demonstrating. Gesture of respect.
  • Sit in seiza or cross-legged when waiting. Don’t lounge or lie on the mat.
  • Bow to your partner before and after training. A mutual gesture of respect and gratitude.
  • Address the instructor as “Sensei”. Unless told otherwise.
  • Be alert and focused during practice. No unnecessary talking or distractions.

During Class

  • Bow to the shomen at the start and end of class. Often where a picture of the founder, Morihei Ueshiba, is displayed.
  • Follow the instructor’s guidance. Don’t teach others unless asked.
  • Respect the pace and level of training. Don’t resist techniques or try to “win.”
  • Take ukemi (falls and rolls) safely and responsibly. Your safety is your responsibility.
  • Help junior students. Do so respectfully and without arrogance.

Attitude and Conduct

  • Be humble and open-minded. Aikido is about self-improvement, not ego.
  • Practice sincerely. Put effort into every technique and interaction.
  • Thank your training partners. Acknowledge their help in your training.
